I'm Olivier de Gruijter, a design engineer, maker and project lead who loves turning ambitious ideas into physical experiences. I bring creative thinking, technical understanding and practical production experience to projects that dare to do something different.
01 / Production challenge
An ambitious immersive world comes with complex challenges. Select one to see how my experience could help.
At Jason Bruges Studio and through my own practice, I have worked at the intersection of concept development, engineering and digital fabrication. I translate experimental concepts into workable solutions through prototyping, material research and rigorous testing.
My recent freelance project leadership at Fiction Factory has given me experience coordinating creative teams, production partners and suppliers. I bring a network of makers, including welders, carpenters and set builders through my own studio and workshop.
My background in industrial design and product development combines iterative prototyping and testing with the discipline of planning, budgets and delivery. I help teams to improve ideas without losing sight of practical constraints.
02 / Why Pandora?
“The moment a visitor becomes part of the story; that's where the magic happens.”
While living in London, I visited immersive experiences including Secret Cinema and You Me Bum Bum Train. I was fascinated by how they blurred the boundary between fiction and reality, making the audience part of the world rather than simply watching it.
That fascination has stayed with me. Operation Pandora brings together the things I enjoy most: storytelling, physical environments, interactive technology and the challenge of turning an ambitious vision into something that actually works.
03 / Selected experience
A background spanning design, engineering, prototyping, production and public-facing installations.

For when you'd rather read the whole story in one go.
Dear Operation Pandora Team,
I'm Olivier de Gruijter, a design engineer, maker and project lead who loves turning ambitious ideas into physical experiences.
While living in London, I visited immersive experiences including Secret Cinema and You Me Bum Bum Train. I became fascinated by the way visitors can step into a story and the boundary between fiction and reality begins to blur. The opportunity to help build something as ambitious as Operation Pandora immediately caught my attention.
I'm an industrial designer, engineer and project lead with over ten years of experience developing and realising physical and interactive installations. At Jason Bruges Studio in London, I worked on large-scale interactive installations for venues including the Barbican Centre and Natural History Museum. I also worked at Joris Laarman Studio, exploring experimental design and fabrication. More recently, I worked as a freelance project lead at Fiction Factory, while developing and building festival installations through my own studio.
What excites me about this role is the challenge of combining iterative creative development with the practical realities of physical production. I'm used to coordinating multidisciplinary work from concept and prototyping through to production and delivery, balancing planning, budgets, suppliers and technical feasibility without losing sight of the original idea.
I speak the language of designers and makers as well as the language of planning and production. I also bring hands-on knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes, my own workshop and a broad network of specialists, from welders to set builders.
I'd love to contribute to bringing Operation Pandora to life. I'm available as a freelance project lead from 7 December 2026, for up to four days a week, and would be happy to meet and learn more about the project.
Best regards,
Olivier de Gruijter
